One of the clues was "early Goth Author". I don't know if "Poe" would have jumped to my mind had I not read your blog but it was the answer. HMMMMM. I think getting pets from the SPCA can be a big question mark....sometimes they are sick, sometimes they are old, sometimes they have behavior problems and don't make good attachments to their owners. When you do find one, they somehow know you saved them and are forever greatful. Getting a pet from the SPCA is still far better than getting one from a pet store (aka puppy or pet mill).
